No Shit Sherlock!

What a surprise... Really, can there have been any doubt that Anders Breivik is insane? It's been apparent from the beginning that he is a classic spree killer. He is closer to Thomas Hamilton, Michael Ryan and Derrick Bird than Tim McVeigh.

Now, can people please stop taking his rationalisations on face value? Enough already on the Left with all that bollocks about the unpoliced internet, equating doubts about immigration with Nazism and the need to clamp down on civil liberties. Equally, let's stop with similar rubbish on the Right about the failures of multiculturalism, the success of political correctness and so on.

We need to debate all of those issues, but on their own terms, not in connection with a fantasist killing scores of young people as a consequence of his own psychological defects.

I don't see how you reach that conclusion. The first three all had "personal" scores to settle in their killings and McVeigh's motive was claimed by him to be political, against his government.

Breivik's motive too appears to be political, against the ruling Labour party, and he carefully plotted his killings of the politically active youth of that party. There was nothing random about Breivik's victims especially when compared to those of Ryan and Bird who killed people they happened to encounter while going about the business of settling their personal scores.

"Equally, let's stop with similar rubbish on the Right about the failures of multiculturalism, the success of political correctness and so on."

You think multi-culturalism has been a success? And the march of political correctness has been a failure? - "No Shit Sherlock!"

The difference is that McVeigh didn't style himself a Knight Templar and invent a secret army, complete with hierarchies of grades and ranks. Neither did McVeigh have the time to obsessively work on a 1500-page rant that talked about tens of thousands of victims, possibly up to a million...

McVeigh also did not work alone.

It looks like Breivik had all kinds of social problems, including a certain lack of success with women. This too seems to be common among spree killers.

And finally, I wasn't saying that multi-culturalism has been a success. I think it's a poisonous ideology. I was objecting to those - on all sides - who want to twist what Breivik did into some kind of comment on it.
